Counting points
Most players memorise the common values, but it all comes from one formula. Learn it once, then practise.
Han and fu
A hand's value comes from two numbers. Han come from yaku and dora, and they are what really matter: each extra han roughly doubles the score. Fu ("minipoints") come from the hand's shape and how it was won, and they fine-tune the value.
翻
Han
Riichi 1, tanyao 1, honitsu 3, each dora 1… add them all.
符
Fu
20 base, plus points for triplets, waits and winning closed. Round up to 10.
From han to points
Basic points = fu × 2(han + 2). Then:
- • Ron by a non-dealer: the discarder pays basic × 4.
- • Ron by the dealer: the discarder pays basic × 6 (dealers earn 1.5×).
- • Tsumo by a non-dealer: the dealer pays basic × 2, the others basic × 1 each.
- • Tsumo by the dealer: everyone pays basic × 2.
- • Every payment is rounded up to the next 100.
Basic points are capped at 2,000: once you reach it you have a mangan. Our league also plays kiriage mangan: 4 han 30 fu and 3 han 60 fu (1,920 basic points) round up to mangan too, so they pay 8,000 / 12,000 instead of 7,700 / 11,600. From 5 han the fu no longer matter:
| Han | Name | Non-dealer | Dealer |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5 han | Mangan | 8,000 | 12,000 |
| 6–7 han | Haneman | 12,000 | 18,000 |
| 8–10 han | Baiman | 16,000 | 24,000 |
| 11–12 han | Sanbaiman | 24,000 | 36,000 |
| 13+ han | Kazoe yakuman | 32,000 | 48,000 |
| Yakuman | Yakuman | 32,000 | 48,000 |
Payment table
The values you'll see most. Switch between dealer and non-dealer, ron and tsumo:
| Fu | 1 han | 2 han | 3 han | 4 han |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 20 | — | — | — | — |
| 25 | — | 1,600 | 3,200 | 6,400 |
| 30 | 1,000 | 2,000 | 3,900 | 8,000 |
| 40 | 1,300 | 2,600 | 5,200 | 8,000 |
| 50 | 1,600 | 3,200 | 6,400 | 8,000 |
| 60 | 2,000 | 3,900 | 8,000 | 8,000 |
| 70 | 2,300 | 4,500 | 8,000 | 8,000 |
Red = mangan (with kiriage mangan, 4 han 30 fu and 3 han 60 fu round up too). Tsumo reads "non-dealers pay / dealer pays", or "all" when the dealer wins.
Counting fu
Add everything up, then round up to the next 10 (32 → 40). An open hand won by ron that would otherwise be only 20 fu counts as 30.
| Base (futei) | 20 |
| Closed hand, won by ron | +10 |
| Won by tsumo (not pinfu) | +2 |
| Pair of dragons, your seat wind or the round wind | +2 |
| Waiting on one tile: middle (kanchan), edge (penchan) or the pair (tanki) | +2 |
| Seven pairs (always) | 25 |
| Pinfu tsumo (always) | 20 |
| Simples | Terminals / honors | |||
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Open | Closed | Open | Closed | |
| Triplet | 2 | 4 | 4 | 8 |
| Quad | 8 | 16 | 16 | 32 |
A triplet finished by ron counts as open.
Honba and riichi sticks
Each honba counter adds 300 to a win: +300 from the discarder on ron, or +100 from each player on tsumo. The winner also collects every riichi stick on the table (1,000 each), including their own.

League PT and ranks
At the end of a hanchan our league uses M-League scoring. Everyone started with 25,000 and the "return" is 30,000, so:
1st
+50
2nd
+10
3rd
−10
4th
−30
Example: finishing 2nd with 35,800 gives (35,800 − 30,000) ÷ 1,000 + 10 = +15.8 PT. Tied players split their placement bonuses, and leftover riichi sticks go to the top player.
Your rank points then change by round(PT) + +15 / +5 / +0 / +0 for your placement, minus your rank's 4th-place penalty if you came last. Reach the target to rank up:
