Tile recognition

34 different tiles: three numbered suits, man, pin and sou, plus seven honors. Say a tile as number + suit: 3-man, 5-pin, 1-sou. Written down, the suit becomes one letter, so hands look like 123m 456p 77z (z = honors), and this site writes them that way too. Tap any tile to inspect it.

Manzu 萬子characters · m

Say "3-man". A Chinese numeral above the red character 萬 (10,000).

Pinzu 筒子circles · p

Say "3-pin". Count the circles. The 1-pin is one big ornate circle.

Souzu 索子bamboo · s

Say "3-sou". Count the bamboo sticks. The 1-sou is a bird, often a peacock.

Jihai 字牌honors · z

Four winds and three dragons. Honors can't form sequences.

There are four copies of each tile: 34 × 4 = 136. One 5 in each suit is red (shown here) and counts as a dora.
